A database of almost 6000 variable stars built from the AAVSO (American Association of Variable Star Observers) Validation File as of 19-May-2005, compiled by Bob Denny. It contains the list of stars for which there are data in the AAVSO digitized archives. Many, but not all, of these stars are in the AAVSO visual observing program. It may not include all the stars in the AAVSO special observing programs such as the PEP, eclipsing binary, or RR Lyrae stars. This catalog plots blue dotted circle markers at the locations of the variable stars. The names include the Harvard Designation in parentheses so you can search for AAVSO stars both ways. The catalog is subdivided into objects that come from the GCVS and those catalogued by AAVSO. Positions for all stars are those given in the May 2005 AAVSO star positions file. The selection info for each star consists of the variablilty type code, period (days), magnitude range and codes, magnitude photometric basis code, MK spectral class, and a URL to the AAVSO chart for the star (if one exists). The codes are those used in the General Catalog of Variable Stars (GCVS) and are described in two text files that come with this catalog, typelist.txt and gcvstype.txt. To open the AAVSO chart directly, use the pull down or right click menus and select "Embedded Bookmark". Fourteen stars were omitted due to name clashes caused by AAVSO's all-uppercase naming. Names beginning with NU, for example, could indicate the greek letter 'nu' or the GCVS sequence code NU. They are resolved in the AAVSO comments field with random wording, impossible to process by computer.
