The combined computer-readable version of the General Catalogue of Variable Stars Vols. I-III, 4th Edition (GCVS4, Kholopov et al. 1985-1988) and Name-Lists of Variable Stars Nos.67-76 published in the system introduced during the preparation of the 4th GCVS edition. Prepared for Starry Night Pro by Bob Denny in May 2005. There are 38528 designated variable stars in this catalog. The locations of GCVS stars are plotted as yellow dotted circles. The selection info for each star includes the general variability type ("pulsating", "eclipsing", etc.), specific variability class code, bright and faint magnitudes or amplitudes and codes, magnitude photometric basis code, period (days), and the MK spectral class code. The Starry Night distribution includes several text files originally supplied with the GCVS that explain codes, sources and notes about specific stars.
